Provincial Land Tax

Provincial Land Tax (PLT) is a property tax levied on all land in areas of the province without municipal organization. Revenues contribute towards the cost of provincial services in the unorganized areas.

Reform of the PLT System

Following extensive consultations in the north, the Ontario Government decided to proceed with the reform of the PLT system.  Legislation was passed in the Fall of 2006.  The government will implement a current value property assessment system in the unincorporated territory, which is similar to that in the rest of Ontario.  Changes to the tax system take effect in 2009.

A reassessment of properties in the unincorporated territory outside of school board boundaries will occur in 2007.  Starting in 2009, current value assessment will be the base used to determine PLT.
