Tax on Fuel and Gasoline
Gasoline tax is collected on gasoline, aviation fuel and propane. Fuel tax is collected on every purchaser of clear middle distillate fuel including fuel oil or diesel.
What You Pay at the Pump
Gasoline and diesel fuel are taxed by the federal and provincial governments. In Ontario, the provincial tax rate on gasoline is 14.7 cents a litre and 14.3 cents a litre on diesel fuel. These rates have remained unchanged since 1992.
At the federal level, the excise tax on gasoline is 10 cents per litre; while the excise tax on diesel fuel and aviation fuel is 4 cents per litre. Effective July 1, 2006, the GST is 6% of the final price paid for fuel. For further explanation, visit the federal Department of Finance website.
