Upcoming Changes to the Retail Sales Tax Return
Retail Sales Tax Info Bulletin, Fall 2007
- This notice outlines upcoming changes to the Retail Sales Tax (RST) return.
Background
The Ontario Ministry of Revenue is in the process of modernizing its systems and business processes to make it more convenient for you to comply with Ontario's tax laws.
Improvements to Ontario's tax services include updating the RST return to make it easier for you to read and use.
What is changing?
- Your "Account Balance", showing amounts owing or credit(s) on your account, will be displayed on the new return.
- You will also receive a separate monthly statement with a payment advice if you have a balance owing.
- A "Payment Amount" line (Line 7) will be added to the return, so you can clearly show your calculated payment.
- The "Adjustment" line (currently Line 6) will be removed from the return.
- You will now be able to request an amended return to make amendments to previously filed returns. You will still be able to make amendments in writing, by phone, or at one of our tax offices.
- These new features, including the ability to amend a return, will also be available through your Internet banking service.
Additional information and instructions will be sent to you with your new return.
When will returns change?
The December 2007 return (due January 2008) will be the first to reflect these changes.
To help us make these changes and if you normally receive three returns at a time in December, you will now be sent these in January 2008, and you will receive a single return in December.
