NEWS

The province is providing better service for Ontario businesses by streamlining and simplifying tax administration. The Ministry of Revenue is launching ONT-TAXS (Ontario's Tax Services), an initiative to make services easier, faster and more convenient for Ontario's businesses.

The first step is the launch of 1-866-ONT-TAXS a single toll-free number that goes live today. Replacing 39 existing toll-free numbers, the new number makes it straightforward for callers to access the help and information they need, when they need it. Through the new interactive telephone system, clients will have “one-window” service delivery and convenient access to information, 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

Remaining parts of the ONT-TAXS initiative that are coming soon include:

  • one Business Number for simpler transactions;
  • 24/7 access to on-line services including paying taxes electronically, plus online viewing of tax account history; and
  • improvements to service delivery (for example: accessible service; simplified returns; and a reduction in the number of forms and letters).

QUOTES

"ONT-TAXS will help businesses across all industry sectors in Ontario who remit sales tax or commodity taxes do their business with the government easier, faster and when it's convenient for them," said W. Jack Millar, past Chair of the Toronto Board of Trade's Tax Committee.

"At the Ministry of Revenue, we're changing the way we work to serve Ontario businesses better. Starting today our clients will begin to notice changes that will allow them to do business with the government when and how it suits them," said Revenue Minister Monique Smith.

QUICK FACTS

  • Over 300,000 RST tax clients will be able to use our 24/7 online service by December 2008 - increasing to about 600,000 tax clients by 2010.
