Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit

As announced in the 2007 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review, the government proposes to increase the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit rate from 30 to 35 per cent for labour expenditures incurred after December 31, 2007 and before January 1, 2010.

The Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit is available for Ontario film and television productions. It lowers your tax payable which may result in a refund. It is generally harmonized with the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit. This credit is calculated as a percentage of qualifying Ontario labour costs.

Tax credit rate

  • 15% prior to May 6, 1997
  • 20% from May 7, 1997 to December 31, 2004
  • 30% from January 1, 2005 to present

Regional bonus

  • Receive a 10% regional bonus for filming outside the Greater Toronto Area, starting May 3, 2000.

First time producers

  • Receive an enhanced rate of 40% on the first $240,000 from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2009.

Does my production qualify?

To qualify, your corporation

  • must be a qualifying production company, and
  • the individual producer must have been an Ontario resident for tax purposes at the end of both of the two calendar years before principal photography started.

How do we apply?

  • Attach a Certificate of Eligibility from the Ontario Media Development Corporation to your corporation's Ontario Corporations Tax Return.
  • Enter the total amount of the credit on Line 193 of the tax return.
