BFTIP Application Process

Eligibility Checklist:

  • Has a Phase II environmental site assessment been completed on the property?

    • Further information on the environmental site assessment process can be found here.

  • Did the property fail the Phase II environmental site assessment?

  • Is the property located within the area designated by an approved Community Improvement Plan (CIP)?

    • If you are a property owner and unsure whether your property is located within a brownfield-related CIP, please contact your local municipality.

  • Does the CIP include provisions for financial tax assistance for brownfield remediation?

  • Has the property been approved for the local municipal property assistance program?

If you have answered yes to each of the questions above, your municipality is eligible to apply to the Minister of Finance for matching education property tax assistance for the property(ies) in question.

A copy of the application form may be downloaded from this website or requested from the Ministry of Revenue.  A decision will be made by the Minister of Finance within 30 days of receiving a complete application. Information requirements are listed on the application form, which include requirements for a copy of the draft by-law, and the agreement between the municipality and property owner.

Note:

Municipal staff are advised to contact the BFTIP Coordinator regarding their draft by-law before beginning the approvals process with their local Council. An example of a draft by-law can be downloaded here.
