IFTA NewsFlash Volume 26, Spring 2009

In this volume of the IFTA NewsFlash learn about how the Ministry of Revenue is making it easier for IFTA carriers to comply with Ontario's tax laws, including:

  • Upcoming changes and improvements to the IFTA return
  • ONT-TAXS online - the Ministry of Revenue's new online tax service for businesses and representatives

What is changing on the IFTA return?

The IFTA Quarterly Tax Return for the reporting period of July to September 2009 (due by November 2, 2009) will reflect the following changes:

  • You will be able to file a single return for one or multiple fuel types
  • Your "Previous Balance", showing amounts owing or credit(s) on your account, will be displayed on the new return
  • Your IFTA account number will be displayed as "Identification Number" on the return
  • The calculations for "Average Kilometres per Litre (KPL)" and "Total Tax Due/(Credit)" will be displayed on the front of the return
  • "Fuel Type" and "Surcharge" columns will be added to the schedule on the back of the return
  • The "Amended Return" option will be removed from the return. A new form called "IFTA Quarterly Tax Return - Amended" can be used to make changes to a previously filed return

Additional information and instructions will be sent to you with your new return. Contact us if you have any questions about using the new return.

New online service coming soon for IFTA!

ONT-TAXS online is secure, convenient and free. It saves time, reduces paper and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

By September 2009, IFTA carriers will be able to enjoy the convenience of ONT-TAXS online to:

  • File returns (including amended returns) and make payments
  • View up to four years of account history
  • Update account information
  • Request a refund for overpayment of tax
  • Request IFTA decal renewals as well as additional and replacement decals
  • Turn the paper off – ask us to stop sending your IFTA returns by mail

You will also have the flexibility of providing your employees or representatives with access to use ONT-TAXS online on behalf of your business. For more information visit ontario.ca/revenue.

Changes to your IFTA Return Effective September 2009

1. Your IFTA account number will be displayed for easy reference

2. and 3. The calculations for "Average Kilometres per Litre" and "Total Tax Due/(Credit)" will be located on the front of the return.

4. Your "Previous Balance" will be shown to help you calculate your payment.

5. To make changes to previously filed returns please contact the ministry or use ONT-TAXS online.

6. Important information and messages for IFTA carriers will be located at the top of the return.

7. You or your representative can certify the information entered in the return.

8. For your convenience, online payments will be accepted using ONT-TAXS online.

9. A single return can now be filed for multiple fuel types.

10. A new column called "Surcharge" will be added to the return.

Finalized instructions will be sent with your new return.
