The Business Number (BN) is assigned by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The BN simplifies and streamlines businesses dealings with government.
The BN has two parts:

The Government of Ontario is committed to providing quality clientservice to Ontarians. At the Ministry of Revenue we are transitioning to one Business Number to make it simpler and more convenient for you to do business with us.
In the past, Ontario business owners had to keep track of many account numbers. Now, one number will make it easier to communicate with the provincial or federal government about your tax accounts.
At this time only accounts that will be collecting RST will require a Business Number:

Existing Retail Sales Tax (RST) clients will receive their Business Number, starting July 14, 2008.
All new registrations will receive their Business Number starting on July 14, 2008.

It is important that all of your account information is accurate. Please let the ministry or the CRA know as soon as possible so your records can be corrected if necessary.
No you will not. During the transition the vendor permit is still a valid account number. However, if new you are sending out a new PEC, the BN should be used.
No. The Ministry of Revenue takes the confidentiality of tax client information very seriously. The introduction and use of the Business Number (BN) as an identifier does not change existing information sharing agreements with CRA or other government departments.
Yes, Manitoba, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have all adopted the Business Number.
No. RST is administered by the province and cannot be filed with the federal GST.
No. However, if any of your information changes, such as an address or Trade Name, a registration notice will be issued using the Business Number.
No. Once you are a registered business owner, you do not have to register again.
When your corporation is in involved in an amalgamation, the assignment of the BN resides with CRA. CRA provides you with options. You can either advise CRA that you wish to use an existing BN that is already assigned to one of the corporations involved in the amalgamation or you can choose to have CRA assign a new one.
