Ontario Sales Tax Credit

You could get up to $265 for 2011 for each adult and child in your family to help with the sales tax you pay on goods and services. This amount is adjusted for inflation each year.

The Ontario Sales Tax Credit and the new Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB)

Effective July 2012, payments of the Ontario Sales Tax Credit, Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit and Northern Ontario Energy Credit will be combined into a single benefit payment called the Ontario Trillium Benefit and delivered on a monthly basis.

Am I eligible?

Yes, if you are:

  • a resident of Ontario – because payments are issued in August, November, February and May, you must be a resident of Ontario on July 1 to receive the August payment, October 1 to receive the November payment, January 1 to receive the February payment, and April 1 to receive the May payment
  • 19 years or older, or
  • are under 19 and have or previously had a spouse or common-law partner, or
  • are under 19 and are (or previously were) a parent and live (or previously lived) with your child

How much will I receive?

The amount you receive is not subject to tax and depends on:

  1. the size of your family
  2. your adjusted family net income

If you are single and have adjusted family net income of over $20,360, the amount you receive will be reduced by four per cent of your income over $20,360. Families (including single parents) with over $25,450 in adjusted family net income will see their payments reduced by four per cent of their income over $25,450.

This credit is in addition to the GST/HST credit program and the Ontario Sales Tax Transition Benefit (OSTTB). So, the amount you receive has no impact on your GST/HST credit or OSTTB payments and vice versa.

How do I apply?

You need to file your 2010 personal income tax return to get this money.

When will I receive my credit?

Payments are issued in August, November, February and May. For example, if you filed your 2010 personal income tax return on time (by April 30, 2011) and qualified for this credit, you will receive your payments in August 2011, November 2011, February 2012, and May 2012.
