Ontario Opportunities Fund

Help reduce Ontario's debt by contributing to the Ontario Opportunities Fund. In return, your contribution allows you to claim a non-refundable tax credit. It reduces your total income tax payable for the year in which you contribute.

How to contribute

Here's how to make a contribution:

By redirecting your income tax refund:

  • You can make a contribution on your personal income tax return using all or a portion of the refund to which you may be entitled.
  • You will receive a receipt for your contribution for the next tax year.

Example: If you make a contribution in 2012 on your 2011 tax return, you will receive a receipt in February of 2013. You can claim the tax credit for your contribution on your 2012 tax return as a government gift on Schedule 9. The tax credit will reduce your 2012 total tax payable.

By direct payment:

  • Make a cheque or money order payable to the Ministry of Finance - Ontario Opportunities Fund and mail it to:
    Ontario Financing Authority
One Dundas Street West, Suite 1400
    Toronto ON  M7A 1Y7
  • You will receive a receipt for your contribution for that tax year.

Example: If you make a direct payment to the fund in 2012, you will receive a receipt in February 2013. You will claim the tax credit for your contribution on your 2012 income tax return. You would file this return by April 30, 2013.
