In the Spotlight: Harmonized Sales Tax

On July 1, 2010, Ontario's tax system will see its biggest change in a generation with the introduction of a single, harmonized sales tax (HST).

Many Ontarians will also receive a personal income tax cut on January 1, 2010.

A recent report found that as a result of the comprehensive tax package, Ontario will see 591,000 net new jobs within ten years.

To assist businesses in the move to the HST, Ontario has introduced transitional rules. For more information on the transitional rules, please read the information notice.

Ontario has announced additional exemptions for the provincial portion of the HST for qualifying prepared food and beverages sold for $4.00 or less and print newspapers.
